Bright Star

In 2008 I had the utmost honour to work with one of my heroines, Jane Campion, on Bright Star. based on the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw), and Fanny Brawne,(Abbie Cornish), which was cut short by Keats’ untimely death.

I appear in a scene with both the principal actors, as Keats’ slum landlady.

It’s my first period film role – in a wonderful costume that unfortunately had to be “distressed”. I loved every minute of wearing a corset and I do really get it now when actors tell you how much a costume can help you get a feel of the character. Of course in this picture it’s pristine…..

My beautiful dress before it was “distressed”!

It was also the screen debut for my son Toby – he is on my hip in our scene and was a little pro! I was very proud…..(and he got paid too!)

Urchin Toby

Toby the street brat!

So here we both are….in our grime……it’s a truly beautiful film and I’m really proud to have been part of it
